OpenTrad project

Aims and general description

The aim of the OpenTrad project has been to develop an open-code machine translation system for the main languages of the Spanish State. The OpenTrad project was started in 2004 and completed in 2006. It subsequently continued within the eurOpenTrad project.

OpenTrad’s specific aims are as follows:

• To develop two machines or motors for high-speed, open-code machine translation, and document them in depth.
• To lay down and document standards in each engine module for machine translation, so that the necessary linguistic data formats (monolingual and multilingual lexis, transfer rules, etc.) can be specified.
• To develop tools for maintaining language data and for converting these data into the high-speed format used by the modules.
• To develop open linguistic data that will allow the pilot system to implement machine translation for the following pairs of languages, and to implement the said pilot system.
  • Spanish—Catalan/Valencian, and Catalan/Valencian—Spanish
  • Spanish—Galician, and Galician—Spanish
  • Spanish—Basque
• To offer customised machine translation services to companies and organisations by means of a web platform.

The Opentrad Project has received funding from the Spanish Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade in the "Profit Proyectos Tractores" grant application period for 2004-2006.
